Greek defense contractor to use Honeywell technology in development of police vests
Honeywell announced today a collaboration with Elmon for the use of its Spectra Shield® ballistic composite materials in the rapid development of lightweight protective vests for law enforcement officers of the Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection in Greece. Elmon, a leading defense contractor and systems integrator based near Athens, will leverage Honeywell’s Spectra Shield technology, to produce up to 40,000 of the new vests in the next 2 years for Hellenic police officers. The new vest is designed with Honeywell’s ballistic materials to provide Greek law enforcement with better protection, comfort and mobility at a lighter weight than vests made from woven products. “As we have expanded our Spectra Shield portfolio, we have focused on developing best-in-class ballistic materials that can meet the highest performance standards and demanding protection requirements of militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world,” said Tim Swinger, business director for armor at Honeywell Packaging & Composites. “Our innovation provides high-quality and low-weight materials to enable leading manufacturers like Elmon to design next-generation protective gear for soldiers and service members.” Honeywell’s Spectra Shield series has been widely adopted and proven for the most advanced armor applications globally, from bullet-resistant vests, breast plates, and helmets, to combat vehicles and military aircraft where lightweight solutions and performance are critical. “The Greek Police have chosen bullet resistant vests made by Elmon, their major and most reliable supplier for more than a decade now,” said Ioannis Galanis, chairman and founder of Elmon. “Elmon teamed up with Honeywell to introduce new ballistic vests with Spectra technology that were chosen for having superior flexibility, light weight and high-performance, especially against special types of threats.” Honeywell’s Spectra Shield technology is created using Spectra Fiber made from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene using a gel-spinning process. Pound for pound, Spectra is 15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float. It has up to 60% greater strength than alternate aramid fiber. Spectra Shield technology is a patented Honeywell process designed to optimize the ballistic performance characteristics of Spectra as well as aramid fiber. A preview of the Honeywell/Elmon Spectra Shield ballistic vest will be on display at this year’s Milipol2019, Nov. 19-22, in Paris as well as the SHOT Show, Jan. 21-24, 2020 in Las Vegas, N.V. Honeywell maintains an active Spectra fiber and ballistic materials research program focused on continuous improvement and development of high-performance materials.
