Honeywell Spectra ® Fiber Facility Earns Dnv Gl Approval For Designated Service In Ropes

Honeywell Colonial Heights, VA facility recognized as approved manufacturer of synthetic fibers in marine environments

Honeywell’s Colonial Heights facility, producer of Honeywell Spectra® fiber, was awarded Approval of Manufacturer Certification from DNV GL, the world’s largest classification society supporting marine, renewable energy, oil and gas, electrification, food and beverage and healthcare industries. The certification, which recognizes the Colonial Heights, VA facility for manufacturing synthetic fibers for designated service in ropes, will allow the site to expand high-growth areas for its rope fiber products like ship mooring, heavy lifting and deep deployment and recovery. Spectra, the same fiber used in bullet-resistant vests for the military and law enforcement, has seen increased usage in marine environments as oil production moves into deeper waters and more processing equipment is placed on the ocean floor. The demand for synthetic fibers in marine environments has grown, as companies have converted from steel wire ropes to the high-strength, lighter-weight and durable fiber and certification requirements have increased. The certification from DNV GL includes recognition for several Spectra fiber product lines that are used in these high growth areas as well as critical heavy lift applications throughout the world. “Our customers choose Spectra fiber because it is recognized as a premium brand and our continued growth in the maritime industry reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality materials,” said Gregory Norton, Business Director- Industrials, Packaging and Composites at Honeywell. “We are honored to receive DNV GL approval recognizing Colonial Heights as an industry leader in manufacturing and our fiber as a superior brand.” In addition, the certification supports the adoption of converting from steel wire ropes to synthetic fibers, allowing companies to experience significant cost and energy savings through reduced weight, downsizing of equipment and increased productivity. DNV GL experts evaluated the Colonial Heights facility to determine its compliance with stringent criteria for manufacturing, testing and inspection, product quality control, monitoring and qualified personnel. All manufacturers of metallic and non-metallic materials need to be approved when serving customers seeking DNV GL classification for their ships or marine products. Pound for pound, Spectra is 15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float. It has up to 60 percent greater strength than alternate aramid fiber. Spectra fiber is made from ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene using a patented gel-spinning process. Colonial Heights has produced Spectra fiber for more than 25 years.
