Beaumont, Texas, Pave

Asphalt modified with Honeywell Titan™ achieved lower mixing and paving temperatures, a lower viscosity, and enabled paving crews to use fewer roller passes.

CASE STUDY

Honeywell Titan Used in Texas

In a highway paving trial performed in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation, Honeywell Titan additives were used in a PG 76-22 SMA-D mix to pave 1.2 lane-miles of State Highway 347 in Beaumont, Texas.

Mix Properties

  • Asphalt modified with 50% Honeywell Titan and 50% SBS
  • Modifier mix represented ~6% of the overall asphalt formulation

Trial Results vs. Typical SBS-Only Mix
Asphalt modified with Honeywell Titan achieved lower mixing and paving temperatures, a lower viscosity, met densities and ultimately enabled paving crews to use fewer roller passes, when compared with the mix using SBS alone.

   Typical SBS Results  Trial Results
 Mix Temperature  335°F  280°F
 Paving Temperature  300-335°F  245 - 260°F
 Roller Passes  3  2
 Binder Viscosity (136°F)   1100 cps  750 cps
Cost Savings
Fewer roller passes and a lower mix temperature helped save on equipment and labor costs:
  • Roller passes decreased by 33%
  • Mix temperature decreased by 55°F
  • Fuel usage decreased by 13%*

*Calculated using National Asphalt Pavement Association’s greenhouse gas calculator

Environmental Benefits
Helped reduce harmful emissions (when applied to industry model**):

  • SO2 emissions by 82%
  • NOx emissions by 43%
  • VOCs by 19%
  • CO2 by 18%
